Makeup application has become such a precise art these days. Not only do we have Instagram pictures show us how we should look, but we have You Tube tutorials to make the whole thing do-able, even for us mere mortals. The result is that more and more of us want to achieve that supermodel-esque makeup, but we need the tools of the trade to do it.

Of course, these tools of the trade cost cash!

The great news is that you can achieve that air-brushed appearance for much less than you might think, and not only that, but it's not that hard to do either!

What You Will Need

In order to create that fantastic model cosmetic look with liquid foundation, you will need two things – cosmetic to apply, and something to apply it with.

Now, the foundation you choose is an entirely personal deal, whether you go for MAC or something cheaper, but the sponge you apply it with needs to be thought out just as carefully. See the full range of liquid foundation on Amazon here.

The best makeup sponge for liquid foundation on the market currently is thought to be the Beauty Blender Original, and this is readily available online and in beauty stores. This is the go-to for most beauticians and makeup artists currently, and its high performance is reflected a little in the price. Of course, much of it is about how you apply foundation with a sponge, but the equipment certainly helps. The Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge is a good runner up, and a very close one at that. At a similar price tag to the Beauty Blender, this is another favourite amongst MUAs the world over.

Two other famous and very well used blender sponges include the Zenda Naturals Premium Beauty Blender Sponge, and the Aesthetica Cosmetics Beauty Sponge Blender.

The sponges we have mentioned above are all teardrop shaped, but there are several other shaped sponges on the market that could have a good use for your particular makeup application. These include:

  • Teardrop – Used for application of makeup all over the face, with three sides for precision
  • Pear – This is basically the same as the teardrop version, but it is a little bigger and therefore easier to hold
  • Sculptor – Perfect for foundation which is thicker or heavier
  • Scape – If you want to apply concealer or you want to apply product carefully in a smaller area of the face, go for this type of sponge

How to Apply Liquid Foundation With a Sponge

For our tutorial on how to apply liquid foundation with a sponge, you will need the sponge you have selected and your liquid foundation of choice.

  • Take your sponge and run it carefully under the tap to wet it through completely.
  • Squeeze your sponge until all the excess water comes out, repeat this a couple of times
  • Using your fingers, or simply by squeezing the product onto the sponge, add some of the liquid foundation onto the sponge itself.
  • Alternatively, dab the foundation in dots on your face in various places.
  • Using the sponge, bounce it across your face, encircling the foundation and allowing it to give a more even coverage. This process is called stippling, and it is used to give an air-brushed, professional look.
  • Do not swipe the brush across the face or rub the product into the skin. When you apply foundation with a sponge you are not swiping like you would with a brush, you are dabbing and bouncing!
  • Continue this stippling process until all of the foundation is blended well onto the skin and you don't have any lines or places which have been missed
  • It's now time to clean the sponge.

How to Clean a Makeup Sponge

Once you have used your makeup sponge, it's best to clean it. You don't necessarily have to do this every time, but when you think about it rationally, it is probably best. The old cosmetic is going to have soaked into the sponge a little, and if you keep reusing it then you are simply applying old cosmetic to your skin.

  • Rinse the sponge under the tap
  • Squeeze well, until all the excess cosmetic comes out and the water runs clear
  • Squeeze again until it is as dry as it is going to be at this point
  • Place the sponge in a tissue and squeeze once more
  • Place the sponge on a tissue in the window, allowing it to air dry

To really make sure your sponge is ultra-clean, you could incorporate the use of cosmetic cleaning shampoo, such as the Travelmall Makeup Brush Cleaning Shampoo; whilst this is for brushes, you can easily use it on sponges too. Perhaps running through the cleaning process with the shampoo once per week would be a good idea to incorporate into your routine.
